Charnwood’s Geology

Event Details

Discover 600 million years of history on your doorstep…

Charnwood’s landscape and history has been shaped by its geology. Over the past 600 million years, the area we now call Charnwood Forest has been a volcanic island, a mountain range, a rainforest, a desert and has even rested at the bottom of a warm tropical sea!

If you would like to learn more about the evolution of Charnwood’s landscape you can do so at one of two free workshops to be held in September. Geologist Gill Weightman will be leading the sessions and will help us to get to grips with the different rock types emerging from each of these periods of geological time.

There will be an opportunity to learn about the geology in your own village and also to handle examples of different types of locally occurring rocks and learn how to identify them.

This two-hour workshop will be held on Tuesday 23rd September between 2pm and 4pm at Mountsorrel Library and Learning Centre, Church House, The Green, Mountsorrel, LE12 7AF. Contact us to book a place.
